What this covers
Home nursing is the delivery of nursing care in the patient's own home. It covers wound care and dressings, giving prescribed injections, care for bedbound patients, taking samples, and teaching family members how to help. In Portugal this care may only be provided by nurses registered with the Ordem dos Enfermeiros, the national nursing body.
What people ask for most
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Administering prescribed injections
- Care after surgery at home
- Taking blood or other samples
- Care for bedbound patients
- Preventing and treating pressure sores
- Teaching family carers
- Checking blood pressure and glucose
Timing and emergencies
Home nursing does not replace emergency care. For chest pain, breathing difficulty, bleeding that will not stop or sudden confusion, call 112. For planned care, keep the discharge letter, the medication list and the prescriptions for dressing materials to hand, because that is what lets a first visit be arranged without losing days.
How to choose well
- Ask for the professional licence and confirm the registration with the Ordem dos Enfermeiros
- Describe the clinical situation in detail and show the discharge letter before booking
- Confirm who supplies dressing materials and what you have to buy yourself
- Agree the visit frequency, the times and who to contact between visits
