Câmara de Lobos is a municipality on the south coast of Madeira, immediately west of Funchal, made up of five parishes. It combines a dense fishing town at sea level, terraced slopes of vine and banana, and the deep inland valley of Curral das Freiras, enclosed by mountains and reached by a winding road.
The area
In the old core of the town the houses are small and the lanes narrow, which makes vehicle access and removals awkward. In the higher parishes such as Estreito and Jardim da Serra, detached houses with land are the norm, bringing garden work, pruning and roof maintenance. Along the seafront, wind and salt wear through railings, gates and window frames quickly.
