Home services in São Vicente: the north coast valley

São Vicente fills a deep valley on the north coast, linked to the south by tunnels through the mountains. It is one of the wettest parts of the island, and that shapes almost all home maintenance. Damp is the first thing to think about here.

Photograph of São Vicente, Madeira

São Vicente is a municipality on the north coast of Madeira with three civil parishes: São Vicente, Ponta Delgada and Boaventura. The town lies in a deep valley between escarpments at the mouth of the river, and the rest of the municipality spreads over farmed slopes facing the north Atlantic. Rainfall is heavy and humidity stays high for much of the year.

The area

Housing is mostly detached properties with land, many of them old and still tied to vines, vegetable plots and animals. Constant rain and humidity work on walls, timber and roofs, and interior mould is a recurring winter problem. Ventilation, insulation and keeping gutters clear matter more here than anywhere on the south coast.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth calling someone from the south for a job in São Vicente?
It is, if the job justifies the trip. The tunnel route from Ribeira Brava is good, but it is still a long drive for one small task. Name your parish and group several jobs together to get more competitive offers.
What can be done about constant damp inside the house?
Start by identifying the source: water coming through the roof or walls, or condensation from a lack of ventilation. Airing the house daily, even in winter, and heating it steadily cuts condensation considerably. If mould returns in the same spot, have a professional look at the wall before you paint again.
How should I describe a job to get useful offers?
Say what is happening, since when, and what you have already tried. Add photos of the problem and, where you can, a measurement. Mention the hamlet and how to reach the house too, because access in the north is not always obvious.
